A 700 YEAR SNAPSHOT OF ALNWICK CASTLE HISTORY
When Northumberland Estates commissioned a major exhibition to celebrate the Percy family's 700 year tenancy of Alnwick Castle, Indigo was invited to produce the audio visual content.
Working with Blue the design company, Indigo created work in a variety of media to compliment exhibits displayed throughout the Castle and grounds.
John Adams, Project Director AV, at Indigo Multimedia explained: “Presenting a detailed history of the Castle and family would have been a prohibitively lengthy task, so it was agreed that each of the seven centuries would be represented by one Percy family member of note."
A prominent example was Henry Percy, better known as Harry Hotspur, the brave and fearless knight immortalised by Shakespeare, in Henry IV. Indigo created a funny and irreverent animation of his life story, designed to engage both younger visitors and their parents.
The company also created a soundscape to evoke the intense conflict during a 14th Century siege, which is heard by visitors as they pass through the Barbican Gatehouse. This contrasted with more reflective recordings of letters written by the first Duchess Elizabeth Percy during the mid-18th Century, when the castle and grounds were being extensively restored.
Finally Indigo was asked to produce a digital portrait of Ralph Percy, the current Duke of Northumberland. John said: “It was a very rare opportunity to interview the Duke who offered some interesting insights into family life at Alnwick Castle.”
Clare Baxter, Collections Manager at Alnwick Castle said: “Indigo Multimedia have worked hard in helping us to bring the last 700 years of Alnwick history to life. The Percy family have a rich and colourful past and we were keen to make sure that was conveyed in an accessible and fun way to our visitors. We are delighted with the results and the feedback from visitors has been fantastic.”
